As a primarily upper middle class residential area, South Granville has one of the most diverse examples of home architectural styles in Vancouver. It is an elegant neighbourhood that is peaceful and mostly larger lots with tree lined streets. Early development in the 1900s saw similar development to Shaughnessy but on smaller lots. In the 1930s, 1940s major development especially along Granville and Oak street began. Even along these major streets, homes were often sheltered with bushes or trees to maintain their stately elegance.
One of the key historic sites in Vancouver sits in South Granville known as Shannon site and it is recognized a site of Canadian heritage…”Shannon is a large ten acre estate in South Vancouver, comprised of an important three-storey Beaux Arts mansion, elaborate Italianate gardens, a gate house and coach house, now all converted to residential suites. The perimeter of the property has been redeveloped with infill townhouses – Shannon Mews – and low rise apartment buildings.” There is architectural influence from architects Somervell and Putnam in 1915-1925, Bernard Palmer in 1925, and famous Arthur Erickson for infill housing in 1974.
As demand for housing grew in the area, rezoning and development has grown along Granville and Oak. Even the Shannon site developed as a heritage site, included rental and townhouse developments. The homes in this area are certainly some of the most interesting found in all of Vancouver.
