“Kerry’s Dale” was named after a rail station itself named after a woman’s home in Scotland. It was originally a municipality of Point Grey before 1929. Point Grey having such a prestigious reputation, Kerrisdale would be like the sister that travelled more to discover herself. Starting out Scottish and Irish and taking on British character, the neighbourhood began to change in the 80s with more immigrants from Hong Kong, Korea, Spain, Germany, Japan. The architecture started to changed from rustic to being mixed with modern large homes. The historic architecture was a mix of Tudor revival, English Storybook, Craftsman. Newer homes either preserved some of this character or were rebuilt to Moderne, Millenium builds.
Basement suites for students and exchange students began to become a popular means of mortgage help. This demand evolved to development of apartment blocks around popular schools in the area. The main intersection 41st Ave & West Boulevard offers hobby shop feel. There are custom shops including tailor, garden, small department stores, shoes, tea, bakeries, and restaurants.
The author grew up in this area and has a special attachment to the brick paths and the creative mom and pops stores that came and went along 41st Ave @ W.Boulevard. The southern parts of kerrisdale have large homes on tree lined streets. The area is not trendy like Kits or yaletown, its is proud of its toned down taste that works well for young families, professionals, and retirees alike. The mix of shopping, and great schools will continue to attract people to this charming neighbourhood.
The Arbutus Greenway is developing and offers an 8Km bikeway, walkway from Kitsilano to Kerrisdale to Marpole. Don’t forget to stop for a coffee or shop along the way.
