University is a key example of how Metro Vancouver preserves a key resource through its unique Metro Vancouver membership. The University Endowment Land Act sets apart areas for future development for UBC as well as for ecological preservation. Although Metro Vancouver provides services, but it is governed by Electoral Area A. There are a mix of leasehold and freehold properties available in this unique area.
West Coast forest
Much of the University Endowment lands is set aside for preservation and much of the residential development is concentrated in University Hill community in the north east part of the campus. Because the area was primarily west coast rainforest, the setting for this community is very west coast suburban with beautiful forest views balanced with peaceful greenspace. The upcoming development area, Lelem development just south of University Hill will be modeled after the example of the Musqueam philisophy — community interconnected with pristine forest.
